The photographic performance of this project is to overlay a material reality with a virtual one, erasing the border between the two worlds. It is a response to the proliferation of visual projects that take place in virtual spaces. It is a questioning about the notion of border and territory. A mix of two distinct realities into a single image. I want to show that we can use a virtual space in conceptual photography and approach these areas with the same sensitivity as the physical space.

ESQ: What was your favorite online Lost theory?

CC: There was a theory that it was all taking place in the dog’s head.

DL: One of the most popular theories during the first season was that they were in purgatory — that they had all died on the plane. That was not our favorite theory because it feels like we were saying it in season one, we were saying it in season two, and we’re saying it three years after the show ended that it wasn’t that.

CC: It’s okay, nobody believes us.

DL: We’re as unreliable as narrators come. But then another popular theory was that the island itself was some sort of crashed spaceship and the hatch only fed into that thinking. The idea was when they blast this thing open and go down they’re going to be inside of some UFO and then the island is just going to lift off out of the water and blast into space for season two. There was a part of me that was always like, “It would be so great if we actually did that!”

Was sich zunächst schrecklich anhört, ist ziemlich cool. Nein, es handelt sich hierbei nicht um diese zehnsekündigen Teaser-für-Teaser, sondern um einen echten Trailer, der uns den Ausflug von Hazel und Augustus nach Amsterdam digital näherbringt. Obwohl ich die Reise an sich bereits für einen kleinen Spoiler halte, scheint die Marketingabteilung davon auszugehen, dass ohnehin neunzig Prozent ihrer potentiellen Zuschauer das Buch gelesen haben und den Film sehen werden, komme was wolle. Also geht man damit recht offen um und kreiert eine nette Geschichte aus Bildern, Selfies und Momentaufnahmen, die beim Auslandsausflug von zwei verliebten Teenies wahrscheinlich wirklich so online nebenher entstehen würde. Das macht die Geschichte umso greifbarer und realer, nettes Gimmick. Außerdem gibt es einen Cameo von Willem Defoe, der bisher in den Trailern noch nicht auftauchte.

Erst Pluto, dann die James Camerons Titanic-Sterne, dann Jon Stewarts Globus im Vorspann und nun Zombies. Gibt es denn nichts mehr, was vor dem Black Science Man sicher ist? Dass Zombies dank Insekten und wilden Tieren langfristig kein Problem darstellen, kann ich akzeptieren. Aber dass das ganze Konzept des Romero-Zombies flöten geht, finde ich jetzt auch doof. Wobei ich jedoch ohnehin immer ein größerer Fan der 28 Infizierten bin und mich jetzt bestätigt fühle. Danke, Black Science Man!
