Bei meiner Recherche für meine Examensarbeit stieß ich auf diese wunderschönen Illustrationen für Wells’ The War of the Worlds (Amazon-Partnerlink) von Autor Edward Gorey.

Gorey illustrated a special edition of H. G. Wells’s The War of the Worlds for the celebrated Looking Glass Library series, published in 1960 under theNew York Review of Books Classics imprint. One of Gorey’s inimitable pen-and-ink drawings adorns the beginning of each chapter.

Working for months at a time just penciling a comic book I started these portraits to get a bit of inking and colouring out of my system. I shouldn’t say ‘portraits’, I’m not going for much of a likeness. Usually I’ll glance at a couple of photographs and then go off and draw a vague impression. Margaret Seddon is blonde, Judith Resnik is a bit barmy looking, that sort of thing.

I started with Valentina Tereshkova in January 2009 thinking if I drew one every week I’d finish the series around the end of the year. See how well that worked out.

Wisst ihr noch, als World War Z mit einem Trailer raus kam und wir alle eher nicht so beeindruckt waren und dann… das Poster raus kam? Ich meine, es ist nicht wirklich schwer ein gutes Teaserposter für diesen Film zu machen. Es geht immerhin um eine globale Zombiekrise. Easy, right? Das dachten sich auch ein paar Künstler, die daher alternative Posterentwürfe gemacht haben, die allesamt nicht wirklich großartig, aber ganz nett sind auf denen gute Künstler aufbauen könnten.

Kevin Gill ist ein Spacenerd und fragte sich, wie unser staubiger Nachbarsplanet mit etwas mehr Wasser und Bepflanzung aussieht. Ich habe auch letztens eine Zeitskala gefunden, die ich jetzt nicht mehr finden kann, die von grob 100 Jahren Dauer ausging und gerade einmal 1,5 Billionen Kosten prognostiziert. Also gerade einmal zwei Bankenbailouts. Schnäppchen!

He decided — not all too scientifically, he admits — which places seemed like they would be verdant, and which would be deserts. “For example,” he explains, “I didn’t see much green taking hold within the area of Olympus Mons and the surrounding volcanoes, both due to the volcanic activity and the proximity to the equator (thus a more tropical climate). For these desert-like areas I mostly used textures taken from the Sahara in Africa and some of Australia. Likewise, as the terrain gets higher or lower in latitude I added darker flora along with tundra and glacial ice. These northern and southern areas textures are largely taken from around northern Russia. Tropical and subtropical greens were based on the rainforests of South America and Africa.”
