Wie viele andere Filmfans fand ich die diesjährige Comic-Con im Bereich Film etwas enttäuschend. Keine Fantastic Four, nichts von Jurassic World und Marvel und DC gaben nur Termine für zukünftige Unternehmungen bekannt. Doch Rettung kam von Weitem angerast, genauer gesagt Australien, in Form des Trailers zu Mad Max: Fury Road (Kinostart: 14. Mai 2015). George Miller kehrte zurück und führt das zu Ende, was er angefangen hat. Dann blieb gab es Probleme, Reshoots, etliche Zweifel. Der Film versank tief in der Produktionshölle. Und dann kommt dieser wuchtige Trailer und bläst uns alles davon, damit hat keiner gerechnet.

Der Trailer hat aber nicht nur meine Vorfreude auf den Film ins Unermässliche gesteigert, sondern auch eine persönliche Retrospektive bei mir ausgelöst. Ich habe die Filme wieder verschlungen und ich wusste direkt wieder, wieso ich so ein Faible für postapokalyptische Settings habe. Ganz verrückt bin ich jedoch noch nicht geworden, immerhin will ich mir kein eigenes Auto mit Spikes und Waffen bauen und damit durch die endlose Wüste Australiens fahren.

Doch die Leute gibt es. Der großartige Autoblog Roads & Rides hat sich mit Ron Griffith getroffen, der seinen Traum wahrgemacht hat. Ron arbeitet tagsüber als Automechaniker in der kalifornischen Mojave Wüste und nachts an seinem ganz persönlichen Mad Max Auto, dem Monstr Carlo, mit dem er am Wasteland Weekend teilnimmt. (Die diesjährige Veranstaltung ist Ende September, falls jemand einen Urlaub planen möchte.) Dort gibt es zwar auch Ringkämpfe, Kostümwettbewerbe und Konzertveranstaltungen, aber die Hauptattraktion ist eine Rennstrecke durch die Wüste, die Ron bereits mit seinem Auto gewonnen hat.

The mechanical nature of the car is nothing to write home about. It’s a stock Chevy 350 with a stock automatic transmission. “The car still uses points,” says Ron. Points work and when you are scavenging through the wasteland you want to keep things easy to maintain. Besides making sure the car runs, Ron has also outfitted the car with offensive and defensive equipment that is both practical and menacing for this wasteland world. For example, a crossbow that shoots saw blades sits on the top of the car. Numerous sharp object protrude from every angle of the body, which come in handy when ramming opponents. In addition to the weapons, the Monstr Carlo’s interior is caged in so the driver is well protected from other attackers. In between pillaging and pummeling, Ron and his crew like to relax and count their booty, so he built a table and umbrella that props up in a matter of seconds off the trunk to shield him from the hot desert rays. “I like to kick back and read my latest edition of Nuclear News,” says Ron with a grin

Ich hätte da jetzt sofort Lust mitzufahren, wobei ich mit meinem Ford Focus dort wohl nicht viel reißen würde.
