Posting this not because I think it’s particularly good or because I like it but because it’s nice seeing hand-drawn animation like that and because I once drew a perfect nail polish replica of the red Gorillaz logo on my school binder in seventh grade. Kinda sad how you lose touch with stuff that meant so much to you. Not my fault in this case. I would watch a full-length film like this though. Go full Interstellar 5555 if you dare.

Wie schon fürs Debütalbum Ways To Get Out spielt Far Caspian einmal für die Kameras live das komplette neue Album. Autofiction mochte ich sehr, ein fantastischer Followup, und wie hier ein Track in den anderen überfließt und die Live-Performance diesen fuzzy Sound noch verstärkt, finde ich einfach krass. Das ist genau mein Wetter. Habe mir das komplette Ding jetzt schon drei Mal reinzogen in den letzten beiden Tag, ein absolutes BRETT!

All my life I thought I’d change…

Die australischen Alt-Rocker von sleepazoid überzeugten mich bereits mit ihrer ersten EP Running With The Dogs und ihrem shoegazey Post-Rock-Sound. Die zweite, frisch erschienene EP New Age ist nun endgültig Grund, sie ins Herz zu schließen. Vier Songs, alles Banger, kein Filler. Fantastischer noisy, grungy, dreamy Sound – a band to watch!

New Age ist eine Ansammlung rauer, melodischer Tracks über das Weitermachen nach einem Bruch im Leben, erzählt von der dominierenden Stimme von Frontfrau Nette France zu wütenden Riffs und lauten Drums. Das wirkt getrieben, rastlos und steckt voller Energie und ist durch die vorgetragene Entschlossenheit mitreißend.

Ich drohe mich in der Causa Snail Mail eigentlich nur zu wiederholen. Wie bei der ersten Singelauskopplung zum neuen Album Dead End bin ich auch bei “My Maker” nicht begeistert von der stimmlichen Klangfarbe und der “Gesamtstimmung” ihrer neuen Songs. Jedes ihrer Alben hörte sich bisher entdeckungsfreudig an, wobei nicht jede künstlerische Richtung Früchte trägt, und ich bin insgesamt ein Fan von ihr als Künstlerin. Daher werde ich ihr treu bleiben und ich freue mich auch auf das komplette Album, but I’m just not feeling it! Not hitting the mark for me unfortunately.

Und das liegt auch nicht nur an der Stimme, sondern inzwischen mehr an dem Songwriting generell. “My Maker” ist leider geradezu ein Paradebeispiel dafür, wie sehr ihre neuen Tracks Hooks, Energie oder spannende Lyrics vermissen lassen. Dieses “Yeah yeah” am Ende fällt stark in das Muster einer Künstlerin, der die Ideen ausgehen.

Wet Leg performen “mangetout” live beim Laneway Festival in Australien, falls die knappe Kleidung und das Wetter überraschen. Funny Story, sowas ist mir noch nie passiert: Ich hatte Tickets für ihre Show in Luxemburg letztes Jahr und habe den Termin einfach nicht mehr auf dem Schirm gehabt? Abends kam dann so eine Apple Wallet-Erinnerung rein: “Ja, hi, viel Spaß bei Wet Leg gleich in einer Stunde.” Es hätte sicherlich noch geklappt, wenn ich in der Sekunde hochgesprungen wäre, aber natürlich war der Abend dann schon anders verplant. Mit der Erfahrung im Bauch wurden auch die diesjährigen Festivaltickets gekauft, wo Wet Leg nochmal zu sehen sind. Ich muss nicht in der ersten Reihe stehen sonst, aber nach diesem Video überlege ich mir das nochmal.

I’m still trying to figure out how to feel about Geese. I honestly haven’t listened to enough of their three albums to have any super strong opinions but I did like frontman Cameron Winter’s solo album a lot last year as it fits the whole solo young yearning man package he’s got going for him. He’s an incredible lyricist for his age. And yet I think his fickle voice and moody singing don’t work with his band’s sound very often.

And to compare them to The Strokes, as I’ve seen many do, well, that is just a bridge too far for my millennial ass. To me it seems like they have gained less traction because of their music and more about some sort of online phenomenon. Which also goes with their covers, in earnest and otherwise, and with the accompanying “jokes” on display, like those in their Tiny Desk Concert. It’s the same energy that attracts the kind of horrible fan antics you’ve seen at 100 gecs shows and the like: a thousand people convinced they’re in on some great joke.

The Tiny Desk set itself is fine, the performance of their track “Cobra” is quite lovely for example, but as much as I don’t wanna be an old crank, I really think they just don’t have the tunes to get comparisons like the one above. Ultimately it feels to me they’re a band people are liking because they have been told or feel they should like.
