Ich habe ja geglaubt, dass ich mir anmuten kann, relativ viel über die Mondlandungen der Apollo-Missionen zu wissen, aber das war mir neu: Auf dem Mond hinterließ die Crew von Apollo 15 ein Denkmal für alle bis dato verstorbenen Astronauten. Es handelt sich um einen kleinen “Fallen Astronaut” vom belgischen Künstler Paul Van Hoeydonck, der damit wohl der erste Künstler aller Zeiten ist, der ein Kunstwerk außerhalb unseres Planeten hat. Das liest sich doch schön im Lebenslauf.

First coined by author Frank White in 1987, The Overview Effect is the term used to describe the cognitive shift in awareness caused by the awe-inspiring experience of viewing the Earth from orbit. To mark the 40th anniversary of the famous “Blue Marble” photograph, five astronauts describe their first-hand experience with the cosmic phenomenon.

Gestern vor 40 Jahren startete Apollo XVII, die letzte bemannte Mission der NASA zum Mond. Eugene Cernan und Harrison Schmitt waren die letzten beiden Menschen, die auf dem Mond gewesen sind – und das sind jetzt fast 40 Jahre her. Meine Güte, das macht mich so unglaublich depressiv. Ich will einfach, dass ich auch so etwas in meinem Leben miterleben kann. Ich denke auch, dass die Leute deshalb so kollektiv ausflippten als Curiosity sicher auf dem Mars landete. Die wollen das. Die wollen träumen; mit den Worten von Dr. Tyson: We have stopped dreaming.

Okay, erst einmal alle durchatmen: Die NASA hat nicht kleine grüne Männchen oder Bakterien auf dem Mars gefunden, aber ihre erste Bodenprobe hat chlorierte Methanverbindungen aufgespürt, Moleküle, die Carbon enthalten und das ist ein Nebenprodukt von Leben. Gab es also mal Leben auf dem Mars? Nicht notwendigerweise, denn bei der NASA ist man sehr vorsichtig, wie gute Wissenschaftler es eben sein sollten. So könnten die Verbindungen auch von der Erde mitgeschleppt worden sein oder von außerhalb, dem Kosmos selbst (z.B. Asteroid), stammen.

Even if NASA does determine that the carbon came from Mars, that alone isn’t enough to confirm that Mars ever supported life. Instead, scientists must further analyze the form of carbon to find out whether or not it was abiotic, that is, the result of a non-living chemical or physical process, or whether it was biotic — the result of a biological process from a living microbe or other organism. via TPM

Es gibt also noch jede Menge zu tun in den nächsten 23 Monaten der Curiosity Mission. Doch man darf davon ausgehen, dass unser momentaner Lieblingsrover darüberhinaus einsatzfähig sein wird und unser Wissen um den Kosmos mit diesen einzigartigen Entdeckungen bereichern wird.

GQ: How old do you think the Earth is?

Marco Rubio: I’m not a scientist, man. I can tell you what recorded history says, I can tell you what the Bible says, but I think that’s a dispute amongst theologians and I think it has nothing to do with the gross domestic product or economic growth of the United States. I think the age of the universe has zero to do with how our economy is going to grow. I’m not a scientist. I don’t think I’m qualified to answer a question like that. At the end of the day, I think there are multiple theories out there on how the universe was created and I think this is a country where people should have the opportunity to teach them all. I think parents should be able to teach their kids what their faith says, what science says. Whether the Earth was created in 7 days, or 7 actual eras, I’m not sure we’ll ever be able to answer that. It’s one of the great mysteries.

Die MESSENGER-Sonde (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry and Ranging) hat einen Krater auf dem Merkur photographiert und ein Smiley entdeckt.

Although MESSENGER was launched over eight years ago, it didn’t enter its Mercurial orbit until March 2011. Since its arrival at that hot rock, it has acquired 88,746 images, and NASA has plans to acquire another 80,000 during next year’s extended mission.

Damit ist jetzt auch der Galle Mars-Krater nicht mehr alleine. Finde ich irgendwie süß, Mars und Merkur lachen uns an.

Neil deGrasse Tyson ist überall. Er ist der Carl Sagan unserer Generation. Kein Wunder also, dass auch Superman mal bei ihn ans Hayden Planetarium in New York kommt um ihn nach seiner Heimatwelt Krypton zu befragen.

DC Comics kam aber wirklich auf Tyson zu um einen vernünftigen Stern zu finden, der zu Supermans Geschichte passen könnte. Er fand einen. So cool der Typ:
