Jetzt wird es ernst. Heute wurde das erste offizielle Spin-Off im Star Wars Universum angekündigt. Regie wird Gareth Edwards führen, das Drehbuch stammt von Gary Whitta und der Film kommt am 16. Dezember 2016 in die Kinos, fast genau ein Jahr nach Episode VII. Hier die offizielle Pressemitteilung:

In addition to the episodes of a new Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm and Disney have begun development on multiple stand-alone movies that will offer new stories beyond the core Saga. Gareth Edwards will direct the first stand-alone film, with a screenplay by Gary Whitta. The film is due out December 16, 2016.

Gareth Edwards blazed into the filmmaking forefront with his acclaimed work on Monsters, a film he wrote, directed and served on as cinematographer and visual effects artist. The skill and vision readily apparent in Monsters earned him the high-profile spot directing this year’s smash hit Godzilla.

“Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life – join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited & honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm, said Edwards.

Gary Whittas screenwriting credits include 2010s The Book of Eli starring Denzel Washington. He is also well known as a journalist and editor in the video game industry, as well as part of the BAFTA award-winning team on Telltale Games adaptation of The Walking Dead.

Whitta states, “From the moment I first saw the original movie as a wide-eyed kid, Star Wars has been the single most profound inspiration to my imagination and to my career as a writer. It is deeply special to me,so to be given the opportunity to contribute to its ongoing legacy, especially in collaboration with a film-maker as talented as Gareth,is literally a dream come true. I’m still pinching myself.”

Gareth Edwards halte ich für eine außerordentlich gute Wahl, er hat mit Godzilla so ikonische Bilder auf die Leinwand gezaubert, dass ich ihm jetzt alles zutraue. Gary Whitta dagegen ist die Wildcard in diesem Unterfangen. Whitta hat mit The Book of Eli solide Arbeit geleistet, aber mit After Earth, der lustigerweise in dieser Pressemitteilung schlicht nicht erwähnt wird, auch den Vogel abgeschossen. Whitta ist allgemein mit seiner geekigen Vergangenheit als Redaktionsleiter der PC Gamer eine riskante Wahl und schon jetzt kommen kleine, sarkastische Clips aus Podcasts ans Tageslicht, in denen er junge Star Wars Fans als “fucking kids” bezeichnet. Das wird Disney sicher gerne hören.

Ehemals hieß es, dass Simon Kinberg und Lawrence Kasdan die Spin-Offs schreiben werden. Nun scheint sich dieser Plan geändert zu haben oder dieses Projekt wurde schlicht vorgezogen.

Inhaltlich steht noch nichts fest, aber es gibt bereits seit der Ankündigung der Spin-Offs Gerüchte um Filme über Yoda, Han Solo und Boba Fett. Letzte Woche kam ein Gerücht online, dass die angebliche Planungsphase Disneys für die nächsten Jahre darstellt. Das schien mir ein wenig an den Haaren herbeigezogen um es zu posten, aber jetzt könnte ja eventuell etwas dran sein:

2015: Episode VII
2016: Boba Fett
2017: Episode VIII
2018: Solo
2019: Episode IX
2020: Red Five

Neben dem hier erstmals genannten X-Wing Squadron Film Red Five wird ein Film über Boba Fett für 2016 gemeldet. Ich halte Boba Fett für keinen heiligen Charakter, den man nicht antasten darf, weshalb seine Glanzzeit zu Zeiten der alten Trilogie durchaus eine interessante Geschichte abwerfen könnte. Wahrscheinlicher als das erscheint mir jedoch eine Origin-Story, die eventuell Teile des Spieles Star Wars 1313 aufgreift, das zunächst eine Art Uncharted auf Coruscant werden sollte und dann später auf Geheiß von George Lucas zu einem gritty Boba Fett Game umgebaut wurde, bevor LucasArts die Arbeit am Spiel abbrach.
