Contagion (Review)

This film approaches the subject of an outbreak with a completely secular view, and I believe this to be the film’s biggest downfall. With their loved ones dying all around them, no one turns to God or even to an unknown higher power. Even atheists or agnostics might pray in sheer desperation, in hopes that someone is listening. Who else can conquer death but the Lord himself? (Hebrews 2:9). Death is sadly a part of life, with no one being promised a tomorrow. I’ve been by the bedsides of brothers and sisters in Christ, singing hymns as they seek rest within the peace and love of Christ. Though some have died, this world is only temporary, and Christians can set their eyes on the unseen beauty of eternity with Christ. In 2 Corinthians 4:18, it reads:

“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”

Final Destination 5 (Review)

Another aspect brought out in the film is when the character Peter is trying to justify killing someone to take his place with death. He talks about how he tried to push someone in front of a bus, but could not, because they did not deserve to die. This brings up an interesting point—who deserves to die and who is in charge of that decision? Again, the Bible states in Romans “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (3:23), and “for the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (6:23). I suppose that knowing these things, it does not bother me to see a movie about our “final destination.” I know where my final destination lies.

Apollo 18 (Review) – Achtung, die Spoilern den kompletten Film hier. Echt. Kein Risiko eingehen!!!

The story continues to spiral downward and become more and more unbelievable, while attempting to keep the action and suspense going. The moon rocks begin to turn into some kind of bug (yes, bugs), which chase the men around. Eventually, overrun by the strange bugs and running low on oxygen, Ben flees to the Soviet ship, leaving Nate behind (Ben apparently ignores Jesus’ words in John 15:13: “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.”) Ben proceeds to fly the unknown foreign ship expertly back to the mother ship. In the meantime, the Department of Defense refuses to allow the men to return to Earth. Of course, how the video footage turned up is never clear, but we are supposed to be left fearful of all the moon rocks that have previously been brought home to earth that are bound to turn into the creepy bugs.

All the ways “Apollo 18” departs from any sort of credible reality would be impossible to list here. The words of Isaiah 29:14 sum it up nicely: “the wisdom of the wise will perish; the intelligence of the intelligent will vanish.”

Speaking of the wise, the final insult from “Apollo 18” would be that the story occurs during the Christmas season and the Christmas hymn, “We Three Kings,” is played during the final credits.

Vor etwa 10 Jahren bastelte die Tochter der heute 76 Jahre alten Margaret Wells eine lebensgroße E.T.-Puppe, die vor geraumer Zeit aus dem Familienbesitz entwendet wurde. Nun tauchte die Puppe wieder auf, im Wasser vor der Küste treibend, wo sie ein Strandgänger für eine Wasserleiche hielt. Die Behörden sahen nach und entdeckten mit Verwunderung, dass dies E.T. war, der auf sich auf seinem Nachhauseweg wohl etwas vertelefoniert haben muss. Die Polizei brachte E.T. zu Frau Wells: “The police rang and said somebody has found a body in the Solent and it belongs to you – it’s E.T.”

Dem geht es bis auf einen abgebrochenen Finger (hoffentlich nicht der Zeigefinger!) wieder ziemlich gut.

Aber Ende gut, alles gut: E.T. ist wieder zu Hause und Frau Wells freut sich auch: “I always knew E.T. would come home.”

Da ich hier nicht nur eine Katze und einen Hund gegeneinander kämpfen sehe, sondern verstehe, was hier gemeint ist, bilde mich jetzt ein, dass ich verdammt schlau bin.

Muhaha! T-Shirt gibt’s bei ThinkGeek. Rein theoretisch muss ja die Katze gewinnen…

Beim Schauen des Piloten der neuen Walking Dead Staffel habe ich mir genau dasselbe gedacht, wie der Typ hinter dem Video.

Finde es übrigens schade, dass durch Popkultur und sonstigen Referenzen inzwischen eigentlich jeder weiß, dass Vader Lukes Vater ist und somit einer der größten und vielleicht besten Spoiler aller Zeiten sogar “Star Wars”-Fremden wie meiner Freundin (I’m working on it, guys!) bekannt ist. Hoffentlich hat der Vater ein Herz und lässt die Kinder die Prequels nicht gucken…. nur drei Star Wars Filme… nur drei Star Wars Filme…

Zombies sind als Teil unserer Popkultur nicht mehr wegzudenken. Zombies sind heute überall, zu mindestens in aller Munde.

Überall auf der Welt diskutiert man über Zombies, was man tun würde, wenn sie denn nun kommen oder ob sie nur gehen oder doch vielleicht laufen können (was sie dürfen, denn es sind Infizierte und keine Toten per se. Dazu mal mehr an anderer Stelle). Jedenfalls haben sich pfiffige Leute diesen Online-Talk zu Nutze gemacht und eine Karte erstellt, die zeigen soll, wo genau die Leute herkommen, die soviel über Zombies diskutieren. Schön anzusehen ist das zwar, aber auch ohne große Überraschungen. Natürlich, als Antithese zur Konsumgesellschaft, sind die Untoten hauptsächlich in der westlichen Welt und besonders in anglophonen bzw. anglophongeprägten Ländern unterwegs. Überraschend finde ich ja die Abwesenheit von Zombies im Nahen Osten, und in Afrika, aber die haben genug wirkliche Probleme im wahren Leben und das hat wohl auch was mit Zugang zum Internet und Zensur und sowas zu tun. Das Beste an der Karte ist jedoch, dass sie mit Google Maps in relativer Echtzeit erstellbar wäre und im Falle einer wahren Zombieapokalypse, die natürlich kurz bevor steht, ziemlich von Nutzen wäre, weil man mal schnell gucken könnte, wo man am besten hinfährt.
